Scandium Oxide (Sc2O3) Powder

Scandium oxide (Sc₂O₃) is considered to be a rare earth metal sesquioxide. Sc₂O₃ commonly obtains a cubic crystal structure, although it is possible to observe monoclinic and hexagonal structures as well. Scandium oxide has a comparatively high bulk refractive index (nH = 2.0 at A = 300 nm), high bandgap (5.7 eV, corresponding to an ultraviolet (UV) cut-off of 215 nm), high melting point (≈2430 °C), and high thermal conductivity (17 W*mK-’). The high refractive index and high damage threshold of Sc₂O₃ are utilized in laser optical coatings. In addition, Sc₂O₃ has been found to possess a negative fixed charge. This is beneficial to obtain a positive threshold or turn‐on voltage for n‐type thin film transistors that operate in the enhancement mode. Other application areas of Sc₂O₃ are; solid electrolytes, transparent ceramic scintillators, infrared laser windows, high temperature windows, and photographic lens used at high-temperatures and strong radiation environments.
