Platinum Oxide Nanoparticles
Platinum oxide (PtO2) has been an important metal oxide compound in various different industries. α- PtO2 β - PtO2 are the two stable phases of PtO2. The α- PtO2 has a stable hexagonal structure, a needle-like shape with 6 nm diameter and a length of approximately 50 nm under ambient pressure. The β - PtO2 has an orthorhombic structure under high pressures. Platinum oxide nanoparticles have been utilized as heterogeneous catalysts due to their excellent catalytic activity. PtO2 is widely known as the Adams’ catalyst in the industry. The Adam’s catalyst consists mostly of crystalline α-PtO2 phase. The Adam’s catalyst has a surface area of about 80 m2 /gm; it usually consists of flakes, platelets, powders, and nano-ribbons. Amongst the reactions catalyzed by PtO2; hydrogenation, oxidation, and reduction reactions are the prominent ones. In addition to these catalyst applications, PtO2 nanoparticles are also used in electrochemistry, photochemistry, biosensors, gas sensors, and passivation of high-Tc superconductors.
